Education

In 2024, the Joseph Joachim Violin Competition will once again offer an extensive and varied music education programme for children, teenagers and young adults.

Review of the 2021 offerings

In 2021, young journalists got their chance at the "Young Reporters" workshop. At "Showtime", the participants became directors, made a film and stood in front of the camera themselves as presenters. And in the third project, classes from all types of schools were invited to discuss the topic of the violin and the competition in class, visit the competition in Hanover and experience the event live as "School classes as guests at the Joseph Joachim Violin Competition".

Young reporter workshop

The 2021 Young Reporters workshop with Berlin-based music journalist Julia Kaiser was aimed at anyone aged 14 and over who is interested in writing about music. With expert guidance, the workshop participants acquired journalistic expertise and answers to a range of questions, such as: How can music be put into words? What is essential for different journalistic formats? How objective can music journalism be and how do I get to the bottom of this as a journalist?

Showtime media workshop

A look behind the scenes: As part of a music education project, young filmmakers accompanied the 2021 Joseph Joachim Violin Competition with their cameras. The result of the Showtime media workshop, which lasted several days, is a video documentary in German and English entitled "We want these guys here".

Showtime was a media workshop for anyone who has always wanted to try their hand at the world of media. It was aimed at teenagers and young adults aged between 14 and 25 who wanted to work creatively in a team and were interested in film, interviews and classical music. No previous experience was required.

The workshop was led by Daniel Finkernagel (internationally successful director, presenter and coach) and Uli Peschke (editor, filmmaker and producer). The participants were active as presenters, cameramen, sound recordists, lighting technicians, reporters, editors, producers and production managers.

School classes as guests at the violin competition

In 2021, the Joseph Joachim Violin Competition offered music education for schools in Lower Saxony with the project "School classes as guests at the JJV". All participating classes had the opportunity to attend one of the preliminary rounds of the violin competition at the Hanover University of Music, Drama and Media and experience the competition up close.

Preparation in the classroom
Until the start of the 2021/22 school year, the participating teachers were provided with accompanying teaching materials to prepare for and follow up on the visit. The teaching material included various chapters on the violin and the (music) competition.

The visit to the competition
The visit to the competition was planned in advance with the selected classes and their teachers from the beginning of the new school year. The school classes were accompanied on site at the conservatory by a music mediator. The pupils were given an introduction to the competition and then experienced a violinist live on stage in the concert hall. This enabled an intensive encounter with the violin as an instrument and classical music.
