Pianists

In an era when virtuosity was the rage, Joseph Joachim stood apart from his contemporaries, serving his art rather than flaunting his technique. His honest approach to music was and remains to this day the sign of a truly great musician, an approach which also distinguishes great pianist-accompanists.

These extraordinary musicians must reach even farther than the soloist: they must balance service to their art with accommodation to their colleagues. Working with violinists, whose early education often focuses on the virtuoso repertoire, accompanists play a particular and vital role. A pianist’s training likely covers a wider spectrum of a composer’s work than the violinist’s, and so he can bring his more comprehensive knowledge to music where he is the accompanist.

An artist taking part in a competition is at his most fragile and vulnerable, so the job of the accompanist is especially hard. It demands the skill of a teacher and coach, the tact of a diplomat, the flexibility of a conductor for the ballet, and the telepathic quality of a medium. Rehearsal time is limited, so the accompanist must too have a keen ear in order to quickly adapt the sound, volume and colour of the piano, essentially a percussion instrument, to balance and complement the flowing and lyrical character of his colleague’s instrument and technique.

Joachim and Johannes Brahms gave many concerts together. How fascinating it would be to turn back the clock 150 years or so and hear Joachim performing with Brahms as his accompanist. It is with their example of artistic mastery and integrity in mind that we welcome the pianists who will give their talent and expertise to the young violinists of the sixth Hannover International Piano Competition.
